The $10 million Human Genome Contest
October 4, 2006 · Leave a Comment
Ok, so I’m up and in a writing mood tonight. Anyway, I was on MSN.com (you know, the universal default microsoft homepage) today and I came across this interesting story. I’m taking Anatomy and Physiology 2 nights a week and for the last couple of weeks we’ve been studying DNA, and RNA. Thats why this story caught my interest. Anyway, The X Prize Foundation which is the group that had a 10 million dollar contest for the first person to make it into space a while back has another contest. They issued a 10 million dollar challenge to the first person who can map the human genome. They want someone to map 100 different human genomes in 10 days. This should be a tough challenge because I think there are like 30,000 genes in the human genome. But, to spice it up they are adding another million to that if they can decode the genomes of 100 more people, including some celebrities and wealthy donors such as physicist Stephen Hawking, talk-show host Larry King, Google co-founder Larry Page and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. If this is done I think it will be the first step in curing or preventing alot of diseases that are caused by gene mutations.
“Rapid genome sequencing is widely regarded as the next great frontier for science and will eventually allow doctors to determine an individual’s susceptibility to disease and even genetic links to cancer,” the foundation said. This prize will be called the Archon Genomics X Prize.
The article said that the money will be paid out if someone reaches this goal within the next 7 years. The money for this prize is coming from Stewart Blusson, president of Archon Minerals Ltd. Apparently this dude is “hell-bent on exploration.Of course, the twist is that to accomplish this it will cost $20 million..That seems kinda crazy, to spend $20 million to win a $10 million prize. I’m definitely gonna keep an eye on this because it would be cool if diseases like Lou Gherig’s disease, and Parkinsons went away in the next 10 to 20 years. You can read more about this here at msn.com where I read about this.

New TV Show….The Nine

You Might Not want to read any farther if you DVR’d “The Nine” and plan on watching it later.
Ok, so tonight I decided to check out the first episode of the new show “The Nine”. I was pleasantly suprised right off the bat to see Kim Raver who I know as Audrey Raines on “24″. I live for 24 in the late winter/early spring so it was cool to see her here. I also saw some more familiar faces including Tim Daly who used to play Joe Hackett on “Wings”, Scott Wolf who was on “Party of Five”, and a couple of people I’ve seen pop up in episodes of “Law and Order” and “CSI”. I thought this was a cool show and I want to see more episodes. Apparently these people are stuck as hostages in a bank robbery for 2 days. It doesn’t really tell us what it is but it’s definitely traumatic as they come back together to form a sort of support group at the end of episode one. The bank manager (who was the principal on “Boston Public” if you remember that show) and his teenage daughter were in there and are part of the nine former hostages. They seem to be drawn together by whatever happened to them in the bank. At the very end of the episode the managers daughter, who apparently has some form of amnesia because she can’t remember the 2 days she was a hostage, skips the get-together (group therapy) to go to the prison and visit the bank robber(I can’t wait to see whats up with that). If you TIVO’d or DVR’d this to watch you definitely should. I can’t wait til next week. It’s definitely better than “Jericho” (but I like “Jericho” too) but not as good as “24″(nothing is, not even “The Sopranos”)

Another of my Hobbies

I don’t know what made me think of this but something else I enjoy and haven’t done in a while is called Where’s George. I’m sure you’ve all heard of this but I got one of those bills one time and I was curious where it was from. I looked it up and it was from Cleveland. That was really neat, they even had a little note in there that said something like “George will be set free tonight downtown while checking out the Christmas lights….” So I decided to see what it took to do this. At first I got out the handy pen and wrote on the bills. I decided that wasn’t good enough so I looked around online and found some stamps. I did this alot for a while and I guess I got bored with it. Every once in a while I’ll get an email saying someone has entered one of my bills into the database. I think the farthest ones have traveled are NY, Florida, and Ohio (I’ve made a little map to show you where some of them went). I think it helps that I can see I-95 from my house and would just use the bills to buy gas or a drink at the truck stop. I highly recommend Where’s George because it’s fun to log in and see where a bill you had in your wallet is now.

Yesterday I turned in a job application for a security position at the local hospital. They called me this morning and told me I had an interview tomorrow. I’ve done hospital security before so I have experience but at a different hospital. They told me to prepare for a 1 to 2 hour interview. For the life of me I can’t figure out what they could ask me in that long of time. I hope I get it. I can only imagine what kind of stories that I would have for you guys here. Oh, did I mention that the hospital is in the poorest county in the state (try to guess which one)
