Follow up to a good cause

What a day. A while back I posted about Save Darfur, a charity trying to stop the genocide in the African city of Darfur in The Sudan. Well, my friend Mohan at Blogforpeace.org stumbled onto it and mentioned it in his blog. I am excited because this is the first time I have been mentioned in someone else’s blog. I will be changing soon to www.willifordblog.com so I hope all of my readers will update your links and come with me. Have a good day.

UNC hires Butch Davis today

Well, the University of North Carolina football coach search ended today with the hiring of Butch Davis, the man everyone’s been speculating about for weeks. Athletic Director Dick Baddour announced the decision today with an official press conference scheduled November 27. “We are proud to make this announcement and delighted with the results of this search,” says Baddour. “Butch Davis became our first choice early in the process, although we did not know of his interest in us. We were excited to learn of his interest in Carolina and our football program and proceeded from that point. He’s a first class individual who is committed to preparing his student-athletes for success in all aspects of their lives. I was impressed with his knowledge of the University and his vision for the football program.” (courtesy of www.tarheelblue.comTarheel Fan also reported on this today in his blog:

Laugh line of the statement comes from Butch Davis who said:

“Dick Baddour made my introduction to Carolina happen in a well-planned, well-organized manner”

Only if you consider everyone finding out five says before you intended them to being a well planned and organized. Let no one say Davis does not have a sense of humor.

and he goes on to link to several other websites with articles on the big day in Carolina Football:

Also, for the record here are some of the other media hits:

It’s Official. Finally[850/620 Blog]

UNC Hires Butch Davis as Coach[News and Observer]

UNC Announces Davis as football coach[Charlotte Observer]

UNC Names Butch Davis new head coach[ESPN.com]

My only fear now is that he will have a few years of success and jump to the NFL like he did when he left Miami for the Cleveland Browns. Only time will tell but with the kind of recruits Bunting has lined up that are redshirted now and are coming next year Davis should have some success within his first couple of years.

My Letter to the Editor

If you live in the same town as I do (and I doubt anyone reading this does) you know that I like to write letters to the local paper when I read something that gets to me. Well, this week there was an article about our schools that “..failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), the standard set by the No Child Left Behind federal law.” You should also know that I am very critical of the Republican agenda so of course I feel theis law is ridiculous. I wanted you guys to read what I wrote to the paper and hopefully it’ll get printed.

Dear Editor,

I read in Thursday’s paper the article entitled “Schools miss the mark” about how some of the schools in the area didn’t fare so well on the end-of-grade tests. I find this to be insane. Not the fact that they didn’t do so well, but the idea of using one test every year to gauge how our kids are doing in school. Ever since President Bush pushed his “No Child Left Behind” Act everything has gone wrong. School systems are forcing our teachers to structure their curriculums around what is going to be on the test at the end of the year and not what the kids need to know. Does anyone else not believe this is a tragedy and our kids are the victims? I think we need to give them responsibility back to our teachers as to what to teach the kids and to judge their progress. Isn’t that what they were taught by the Universities they went to? I’m sure the president thinks the No Child Left Behind and End of Grade tests are a good idea but what about the kids who are smart or average students who do not test well? What happens to those kids? Last Tuesday America decided it was ready for a change; maybe we will get a change to this archaic, insane law.

I posted my email too so I will let you know if i get any nasty or encouraging emails.

What I found in Wal-Mart

After reading in Denis’ Blog, Target Culture the post about the Nazi Shirts at Wal-mart I decided to check it out on my next visit to Wal-Mart. Well, that happened to be last night and sure enough, right there in the mans T-Shirt section was the T-Shirt for sale with a Skull and crossbones used by the Nazi’s befre and during World War II. I’m really suprised that more people or religious groups haven’t brought this to Wal-Mart’s attention. Denis said that Wal-Mart had pulled the shirts but he’s on the West Coast and I’m here on the East so maybe news hasn’t traveled this far yet (though we’re closer to Arkansas so it should’ve). And if any of my local readers are reading this, I found it in the Wal-Mart in my county closest to me (ok, I’ll just say it. It was seen in Lumberton Wal-Mart). Go check out the post on Target Culture to see the picture of the shirt.

A good cause

Ok, I know I’m not usually the one into saving the world (I usually leave that side of my personality out of my blog) that distinction usually goes to my friend Mohan at Blog for Peace but I saw a commercial talking about the genocide thats happening in The Sudan. The first page of the website for them Save Darfur has a petition to President Bush that you can sign. It goes like this and you should definitely go check it out and put your name in the petition:

President Bush, Every day, the 2.5 million people chased from their homes in Darfur face the threat of starvation, disease, and rape, while the few lucky enough to remain in their homes risk displacement, torture and murder. Therefore, we call on you to do the following:

  • Strengthen the understaffed and overwhelmed African Union peackeeping force already in Darfur.
  • Push for the deployment of a strong UN peacekeeping force.
  • Increase humanitarian aid and ensure access for aid delivery.
  • Establish a no-fly zone.

My New Blog

Ok, so after much procrastination I have finally decided to change my blog and host it. For lack of a better name I used the domain name I already had and had redirected here. Everyone who reads my blog go ahead and change your bookmarks and blogrolls to www.willifordblog.com (I know, not very original) Thanks to Colleen for helping me find Verve Hosting and helping me set it up soon. Hopefully you won’t see much of a change but maybe one for the better. Thanks for reading.

Who’s the Third

Ok, I was just watching ABC news with Katie Couric and saw that Jack Pallance passed away. That sucks cause I enjoyed his movies. I also saw that yesterday Ed Bradley from 60 minutes died. I’m also sorry to hear that. I don’t watch 60 minutes much but I did enjow Mr.Bradleys sections. I remember one interview he did with Michael Jordan where they played one on one. I know it seems that celebrity deaths always happen in threes so I wonder who the third is. I hate that these two have passed away. Pallance’s unforgettable movie characters and Bradley’s insightful interviews will definitely be missed by me. Hopefully there will not be a third one this time.

My Birthday

Ok, so today is my birthday (33…yuck) and I am going to start my taking a picture everyday since I read that article a few weeks ago but it’s 6:30 and I haven’t taken my picture for the day (my procrastination knows no boundaries) so I will try to find something photoworthy around the house to take a picture of for you guys. But since I have to work at midnight I will probably not get to share it until tomorrow. I will probably be leaving this blog soon but hopefully I’ll be able to export/import everything to my new hosted home. I get paid thursday so I will probably look into that then. Have a fun day everyone

Switching Soon

Ok, so I got an email from wordpress support saying my blog would be deleted if I did any PayPerPost postings. That sucks but it’s ok because I haven’t done any yet. I guess my plan to host my blog is getting moved up so I have a few questions for you guys that have hosted wordpress blogs. 1.) Who do you use to host and are you happy with them? I’m looking for someone reliable yet fairly inexpensive. Also, can you help me come up with a cool domain name. I want something unique (obviously) and cool. I look forward to hearing from you. Feel free to answer in a comment. Thanks
